• Note: As related to Gertrude gertrude_swarthout by her aunt Mary mary_paulding_2: Emmeline Paulding emeline_powers wanted this picture taken a year before, but Fremont did not want to have it taken with his hair long. In those days, boys wore their hair long while they were children and had it cut when they were grown. Fremont crawled under a table and cut his hair before the picture could be taken, and his mother was so angry that she postponed the picture for a year, until his hair grew back. This is the reason Fremont does not look too happy in this picture. ⁶⁾
